What Materials Can S3 Engrave?
S3 marks and engraves most metals, including stainless steel, aluminum, brass, titanium, gold, silver, platinum, and copper. It also works on leather, slate, plastic, rubber, dark glass, black acrylic, and colored tiles.
Two limits worth knowing before you buy: color marking works on stainless steel and titanium only, and cutting is limited to thin brass, stainless steel, and aluminum. Wood, clear acrylic, and clear glass are not supported — clear materials let the 1064nm beam pass straight through, and wood chars rather than engraves cleanly.
What Makes S3 Different from a Standard Laser Engraver?
S3 pairs a 20W fiber laser source with an industrial galvanometer (galvo) scanning head. Instead of moving a gantry along rails, the galvo head steers the beam with mirrors — which is how it reaches up to 10,000mm/s while holding a 0.01mm spot. It engraves up to 1.5mm deep in most metals, marks color on stainless steel and titanium, and cuts thin metal. Actual results vary by material and settings.
Is S3 Suitable for Beginners?
Yes. Dual-light positioning shows exactly where the beam will land, and the electric Z-axis sets focus with one touch — no manual measuring. S3 is LightBurn compatible, so you can import a design in common file formats and frame your first job without laser experience. No design background is required.
Can S3 Handle Larger Projects?
The standard working area is 150 × 150mm. With the optional slide extension kit it expands to 350 × 150mm, which fits wider artwork and full-surface designs in a single pass — no repositioning between runs.
Does S3 Support Rotary Engraving?
Yes. With a BlazeX rotary attachment, S3 engraves cylindrical objects such as tumblers, rings, pens, and curved metal surfaces.
Is Color Engraving Really Possible on Metal?
Yes. On stainless steel and titanium, S3 creates color by altering the surface oxide layer — no ink, no coating, nothing to peel. Shades are controlled by laser frequency and pass count rather than pigment, so color results vary by alloy, power, frequency, and number of passes.
What Safety Precautions Does S3 Require?
S3 is a Class 4 laser product. Wear 1064nm safety glasses whenever it is running, keep the safety key out of reach of children, never look directly into the beam or its reflections, and use an air purifier or fume extractor when marking plastics, rubber, leather, or coated metals.
